Trouble integrating FAB Bank API with Jira automation for payment tracking

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a Jira project that tracks financial approvals, and we’re trying to automate updates based on FAB Bank balance checks. The idea is that when a client’s FAB Bank balance reaches a certain threshold, Jira should automatically trigger a task or notification.

The problem I’m facing is that the API connection to FAB Bank seems unstable. Sometimes requests succeed, but other times Jira returns errors or times out. I’ve double-checked authentication and API keys, and everything seems correct on the bank’s end.

I’m wondering if anyone has experience with:

 - Integrating banking APIs (especially UAE-based banks like FAB) with Jira automation.

 - Handling intermittent connectivity issues between Jira and external financial APIs.

 - Best practices for securely storing and using banking credentials in Jira automation.

Any advice, workarounds, or examples would be really helpful. I want to ensure our Jira automation is reliable and doesn’t miss important balance updates.

Since you’re working with FAB Bank data, the instability you’re seeing is usually less about Jira and more about how banking APIs behave under load. Jira Automation isn’t great at handling timeouts or retries, so direct calls to FAB can fail even when credentials are correct.

A more reliable approach is to route FAB requests through a small backend service that handles retries and rate limits, then have Jira trigger off that service instead of the bank API itself. This also lets you store credentials securely outside Jira and avoid missed updates. In practice, many teams also rely on documented reference flows, such as how a fab salary check works, to design threshold-based automation rather than depending on constant live balance polling.

This setup usually results in fewer errors and much more predictable automation behavior.

Helo @Abdul Basit

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Are you working with Jira Cloud or Jira Data Center?

What types of errors specifically are you getting?

Can you share with us your Automation Rule, obscuring any confidential details? The more information you can share with us about the rule, the better we'll be able to advise you.

Have you contacted the support team for the FAB Bank APIs to find out if they can provide any troubleshooting tips? I see they have a developer portal, but it requires a login (requiring creation of a user account) which I don't intend to set up.
