Trouble adding a relationship type in Jira Road Maps

I'm having trouble with adding a new link type in Jira roadmaps.

When I go into a Jira issue I can can see the option to add a 'has to be done before' or 'has to be done after' issue relationship:

I tried to go into Jira Road Map settings to add and define this relationship so that it appears on Jira Roadmaps, but that relationship doesn't appear on the drop down list!

I have tried creating our own 'has to be done before / after' relationships but, while this work, it appears as a duplicate alongside the pre-existing, not working, relationship in the link issue list (if that makes sense).

Not sure what to do - is there a list of issue relationship types somewhere in Jira itself (as opposed to roadmaps) where we can delete or rename the 'broken' relationship so that we can replace it with the working one?

Thanks for your help with this!

Hello @Adam Taylor

I tried to go into Jira Road Map settings to add and define this relationship so that it appears on Jira Roadmaps, but that relationship doesn't appear on the drop down list!

Can you provide a screen image of what you see? I think you are talking about this:

I believe there are only two types of "relationships" you can add within the Jira roadmap; Blocks and Parent Of. I don't think you can add other types of relationships to the roadmap.

"Blocks" is what to use to indicate that the current issue has to be completed before the issue you specify in Choose an issue. That is the equivalent of what you are saying is your "has to be done before" relationship.

Hi @Trudy Claspill - I don't think that's right - I've been able to add other relationship types in Jira Roadmap Admin settings, including creating brand-new ones, the issue is that an existing relationship doesn't appear in the list so if I create a new one the user is presented with what appear to be duplicate options, only one of which works with Jira Roadmap.

Hm, interesting. I don't work with AR that much, so I could definitely be wrong.

Thank you for the tip about adding relationships in Jira Roadmap Admin settings. (For others looking for that it is under Jira Settings (gear icon) > Products > Advanced Roadmaps > Advanced Roadmap Dependencies.)

Could you provide screen images of what you see in:

  • Advanced Roadmap Dependencies
  • The screen I showed above where you can add a dependency
  • Your Issue Links configuration screen
  • the screen for this - "it appears as a duplicate alongside the pre-existing, not working, relationship in the link issue list (if that makes sense)."

@Trudy Claspill we solved it! The issue was that we were looking for the text that shows on the giving and receiving end of the dependencies rather than the name of the dependency relationship as a whole.

Specifically, the 'needs to be done before' and 'needs to be done after' are part of the 'Gannt' relationship type. We added that in Jira Roadmap settings and we are now goovy.

I don't have admin rights myself (I have to go though an admin) so I can't post screenshots.
