Hi all,

I'm Paolo, I'm looking for activate the Time Tracking feature in Jira within the workflow I'm working on.

Basically, this is the situation I'm testing:

  1. A Story with: Estimation Time= 1d and Logged time= 30 m;
  2. Subtask 1 NOT Estimated with Logged time= 1h;
  3. Subtask 2 with: Estimation Time= 1h and Logged time= 30 m;
  4. Subtask 3 with: Estimation Time= 1h and Logged time= 1 h.

With this configuration, by enabling the checkbox Include sub-tasks I see that:

  1. The total Estimated time is correct (1d 2h);
  2. The total Logged time is correct (3h);
  3. The total Remaining time is 1d.

Follows a screenshot of that Story:

Story + Subtask with 1 subtask not estimated.JPG

For what I understood, the Remaining's time calculation is executed by considering only the contributes giving from subtasks which were estimated.

In fact I have:

Estimated (1d 2h) - Story (30m) - Subtask2 (30 m) - Subtask3 (1h) = 1d

The Subtask1 was not considered while the Remaining time calculation.

In a nutshell, if a Subtask is not estimated but has a logged time, the Total Estimation time of the Story of course is not increased BUT the Total Remaining time of the Story is not decreased by the amount of its logged time.

In fact, if I try to modify my Subtask 1 by adding an estimation time, all the Total calculated values become correct.

  1. The total Estimated time is correct and becomes 1d 3h;
  2. The total Logged time is still correct 3h;
  3. The total Remaining time is now correct and becomes 1d.

See the picture below:

Story + Subtask all estimated.JPG

So, my question is:

Is it correct that the Remaining's time calculation of the Story is executed by considering only the contributes giving from subtasks which were estimated ?

Is this behavior expected by the Atlassian Dev Team or is there a bug somewhere ?

Many thanks for your feedback in advance!

All the best,

Paolo

Hello Paolo,

Welcome to Atlassian community.

I can confirm to you that the results you got from the Time tracking fields are expected. Allow me to explain why:

The fields Estimated is intended to provide you with how much work it's expected from your team to finish the issue, while the Remaining field allows you to track if the current work logged is keeping up or falling behind the expectations. Basically, both fields are used for estimations and not defined targets of how much work it will actually require.

The Time Spent describe how much work was effectively done in that issue, exceeding or not the estimations configured.

That been said, the work logged in your issue is independent of the estimation you proposed, that's why you can even exceed the work logged more than the expected estimations and both field values been summed up to their parents without any dependency.

For more details about it, you can check the documentation below:

Logging time on issues

Let me know if this information makes sense to you.

Hey Petterson,

yeah, that sounds good to me.

Basically, from your point of view the objective is make an estimation for each single activity to be done, independently if it will be tracked by the Story or theirs Sub-tasks, end then collect theirs real spent times.

In that way, it being possible evaluate the original estimation made and learn how to refine the estimation phase as time goes on.

Thank you for your answer!

All the Best,

Paolo
