Getting an error when trying to edit a group via the Atlassian admin console.
Members, name, and description of this group are managed from the external directory, and other apps connected to it that have permission to access.
Welcome to Atlassian Community!
This is expected, any groups that are synced from your IdP cannot be changed on the Atlassian side, you have to make the change in your IdP. You can only manage groups that are locally created in Atlassian.
Hello @Emiliano Reynoso
As @Mikael Sandberg told you, this info popup appears when you try to edit groups that are provisioned from your IdP (e.g., AD / Entra ID via Atlassian Access / SCIM).
If you think about it a bit deeper, it’s actually consistent and makes perfect sense:
Why should Jira allow you to change a group locally, if the source of Group is managed centrally? If your accounts and group memberships are controlled from AD/Entra ID, then Jira is intentionally treating those groups as read-only to avoid configuration drift and conflicts.
From a Jira Administration perspective, the expected operating model is:
Create / manage memberships in AD / Entra ID (the authoritative directory)
Sync into Atlassian / Jira via IdP/SCIM
Jira consumes those groups for permissions, roles, access, and product settings, but doesn’t override the directory-managed memberships
So the popup is basically Jira telling you:
“This group is managed externally. Any changes must be done in the directory, not here.”
Hope it helps. Behinds everything in Jira Ecosystem laying some Logic.
