The sub-task blocking condition is not working

tizzy July 28, 2023

This mechanism worked fine when I was using site-based Jira. I'm not sure what has changed but I have tried every which way to update the condition on the parent-issue transition to bar sub-tasks from closing if they are not in Done or Closed status. It's simply not working.

Is there anyone who can help me with this? Please? :)

Hi @tizzy

From what I understand...

  • You want to stop Sub-tasks from closing, unless...
  • The Parent issue is in Done/Closed

...is this correct?

If not, could you clarify the need? And could you clarify how you're trying to do it now (a screenshot is fine).

Hi Stephen, I wanted to force the parent issue *not* to close unless all the subtasks were closed. As it happens, I figured it out and it now works. And I'm going to cross my fingers that it keeps working.

The issue had to do with the fact that we have both a Done and Closed state in our workflow and subtasks get "closed." That part I don't really get and will have to learn Jira a bit better to see if the workflow needs to be modified.

Many thanks for reaching out. I appreciate it!

Hello @tizzy

Can you clarify the requirement?

You said you are trying to set a condition on the parent issue transition, but then you said to bar sub-tasks from closing.

Are you trying to prevent a parent issue from closing if there are open subtasks?

Can you confirm if the issues you are trying to apply this to are in a Company Managed project? Or are they in a Team Managed project?

Can you provide a screen image of the Condition details for the workflow?

Can you provide screen images of the parent issue and subtasks involved in a scenario that did not work the way you expected?

Hi Trudy, yes, I wanted to force the parent issue *not* to close unless all the subtasks were closed.

To your question, I'm pretty sure it's a team-managed project? (What would be the best way to verify that - do you happen to know?)

What did you do to fix the issue?

To determine if your project is CM or TM you can:

1. Look at the View All Projects page and find the information in the Type column.

2. Or, when viewing the board you can see the information at the bottom of the panel on the left.

When you say you have Closed and Done statuses, are both mapped to the column farthest to the right on your board?

When your subtasks are moved to the Closed status, do they get the green checkmark next to the Status, like this?
