Text formatting lost when viewing a filtered list

Matt Shipman
October 31, 2022

We create a report of tasks that are part of a release by creating a filter. Some of the tasks have bold text and numbered lists. The formatted text formatting is lost when viewing the filter results. Bold text is surrounded by an asterisk and numbered lists have their numbers replaced by one or more pound signs.

Does anyone know if it is possible to retain special formatting in filter results?

Thank you.

How are you viewing the results of the filter?

When I'm looking at filter results in the Advanced Issue Search screen I still see the rendered formatting.

From the Dashboard page I click the Filters option at the top of the page. Then I click Advanced Issue Search. The results have no special formatting. This is what the result looks like.

*This should be bold*

#This is item 1

#This is item 2

#This is item 3

The text that is bold in the actual issue is surrounded by * and the numbered items all show # instead of the item number.

Can you provide a screen image?

In which field is the formatted text? Is it the built-in Description field or a custom field?

Sure. Here is a test issue I created with formatting in the built-in Description field. I included a screenshot of what it looks like when I go to the advanced issue search filter.

Thank you for helping with this Trudy!

Does anyone know anything about this? How do I submit this to the JIRA help desk?

What is the Renderer for the Description field in the Field configuration used by that project that contains the issue?

What browser are you using?

To contact Atlassian Support a Jira Administrator can open a case through this link:

I have run the search using

  • Edge Version 109.0.1518.70 64-bit
  • Chrome Version 109.0.5414.120 64-bit
  • Firefox Version 109.0.1 64-bit

All 3 browsers drop formatting when rendering the results.

I do not know what you mean by Renderer for the Description field. How do I find that out?

If you have sufficient permissions...

In the project that includes those issues, click on Project Settings.

Then under the Issues expander, select Fields.

That will show you the list of all possible fields that might be used in the issues in the project.

Search for "Description". You should see the Renderer called out here:

I have found that if the field shows "Default Text Renderer" here then you will get the results you are seeing. It would be necessary to update the Field Configuration to change the Renderer for the Description field to Wiki Style Renderer to correct the display in the Advanced Issue Search screen.
