How I can create different boards for different teams in the same project?

- How I can create teams on a project?. example Dev team and Design team

- Once I create those teams how I can assign one specific board to one team?

I assume that once i now these, i will be able to see the "team" field on each issue so i can assign the issue to a specific team?

Hi @Steven Soto

Note: Multiple Boards only available on Classic projects / Classic boards. If you're using Next-Gen this isn't possible - it's one board per project.

Boards are a visual representation of an issue filter. What you need is a common denominator for the different teams so you segment the work into different boards.

There is no "Team" creation as such - aside from a method of grouping users so you can @mention them together; see People > Start a Team. This won't help the need you have above however. There is also a "Team" field if you have Jira Premium for Advanced Roadmaps, but you mention you just have Standard for now.

You just need to pick how you'll represent a team on an issue - so you could:

  • Create a new custom field - Team - and add the teams to it
  • Use Labels - if the teams will work across multiple projects
  • Use Components - if the teams are central to one specific project

I would suggest starting with a project-specific field - it gives you more control over teams / team names, rather than a custom field which would require a Jira Admin to change the options.

Once you have your team - to create a board for one of them:

  1. Go to the search box (top-right), and click the "Boards" button at the bottom of the pop-up
  2. Press the blue "Create Board" button in the top-right
  3. Choose the board type, then choose to create the board from your existing project
  4. Give the board a name and relate to your project - then create it
  5. Once you have created your board, go to Options (3-dots icon in top-right) > Board Settings
  6. Select General from the left-hand menu
  7. Under Filter, select "Edit Filter Query"
  8. Modify the JQL query to limit the board by your team's denominator - for example, if this was component it might be project = ABC and component = "Dev Team" ORDER BY Rank ASC
  9. Press "Save" at the top - then return to your board
  10. Repeat this process for each team

Once you've created your team boards, you can then split work into teams using your common denominator - in this instance, by adding components to issues!
