Is there a way I can put my 14 staff into Jira so that i can schedule them to go to jobs based on day and times of the week not based on tasks or stories. Thank you in advance

Hi @Dave lemmon, Yes, Jira can be used for this, and it works quite nice when the setup is proper and you include automation rules so it handles on/off duty automatically. I have myself used Jira for similar things, like.

  • For a former client we converted the vacation planner from spreadsheet tracking vacations for about 1K users into using Jira only. Including reports in Confluence and we connected this to other Jira issues (as a whole) showing if e.g., the assignee was on vacation.
  • I use Jira personally (the free version) for scheduling my trips and vacations.

I'm have on my plan to write articles about these things and post it here on the community. Your question inspired me to actually start out writing an articles solving this exact challenge. You might wait for the article (I will inform you when ready) or I can post the early draft (mockup). Tell me if your interested.

When this is said I might suggest you look into Opsgenie if added licence cost is an alternative, it might solve your needs "out of the box".

Hi @Dave lemmon

You can - I'd probably suggest checking out Jira Work Management as an option for this (it can be a standalone product, or it comes bundled with Jira Software).

This is because JWM has multiple separate views - so it has the board, but also a calendar, list, and timeline view.

For example, you could...

  • Use Issue Types as different job types
  • Set dates for jobs to be completed, using due date (so they show up on the calendar)
  • Create custom fields to list information relevant to the jobs
  • Use statuses for...
    • Job progress - eg. To Do, Next, In Progress, Done
    • Weekly tracking - eg. Next Week, This Week, Tomorrow, Today, Done
    • A mix of both - eg. This Week, Tomorrow, Today, In Progress, Done
  • Still use other features - eg. resolution (what was done to finish the job), flags (to show blocked jobs), etc
