Hi @Dave lemmon, Yes, Jira can be used for this, and it works quite nice when the setup is proper and you include automation rules so it handles on/off duty automatically. I have myself used Jira for similar things, like.
- For a former client we converted the vacation planner from spreadsheet tracking vacations for about 1K users into using Jira only. Including reports in Confluence and we connected this to other Jira issues (as a whole) showing if e.g., the assignee was on vacation.
- I use Jira personally (the free version) for scheduling my trips and vacations.

When this is said I might suggest you look into Opsgenie if added licence cost is an alternative, it might solve your needs "out of the box".
