Supported java versions - JIRA stand-alone

Which versions of JAVA are supported for JIRA stand-alone in Linux?

Developing plugins and would like to take advantage of 1.7.x.... will JIRA be compatible with this version if I upgrade to it on my linux host server?

Oracle JDK/JRE 1.7 is the one you want to go with for JIRA 6.0 and above.
