I'm new to Jira, and I'm having trouble figuring out why some subtasks show as their own issue on the board. When this happens it has a grey box around it with the parent issue number at the top. At first, I thought it may be when the child issue is in a different status than the parent, but that isn't always the case. Appreciate the help!
Hi @Lina
In a board where swimlanes are configured based on queries, the visualization of the tasks can be:
Perhaps your case could be 3, that although it apparently shows AS-20 task in In progress column, it is really in another column but appears referencing daughter in In progress.
I hope it helps you, greetings
Thank you so much for your detailed reply! Looks like what's happening is Case 3. Do you by any chance know what the JQL would be to make it look like that? I'm only seeing the below.

Hi @Lina
It is not a JQL problem, the swimlanes are used to display issues based on what we include in the JQL, so if you need to see in 1 swimlane the issues whose priority is P1, everything is correct.
You may find it easier to configure the board to display the issues by swimlanes based on stories, each swimlane will show a story and its children and also a swimlane itself will appear where those stories that do not have children will be grouped.
As you can see in the image, even if the story has 2 subtasks, one in each state, the story is still displayed in its own swimlane.
The views will depend on how easy it is for the team members to visualize the data.
Hope this helps, greetings

This happens when they are not in the same column. It helps you understand the relationship between tickets

Hey Ignacio,
Thanks for the reply! Is there any other time this will happen? I ask because these two tickets (AS-20 and the child AS-33) are both in the same column (In Progress).
