Some epics are not shown in the backlog

Linda Song January 31, 2021

Some Epics that are shown by the below query is not shown in the Epic panel in a backlog or roadmap view.

The query is:

project = FTL and issueType = "Epic" and statusCategory in ("To Do", "In Progress") ORDER by rank ASC

Has anyone experienced a similar issue?

Thank you,

Linda

Hi @Linda Song

This can happen if the Epic Status is set to "Done". The Epic Status is a field, which is separate to Issue Status and can be set to "Done" from the Epic Panel in a board.

I would consider checking the Epic Status and Issue Status of your Epics in the Issue Search view.

To do this:

  1. Go to Filters > Advanced Issue Search
  2. Ensure you're in List View (where the fields are in columns)
  3. Select Columns and ensure "Status" and "Epic Status" are checked
  4. Enter your search query
  5. Drag the "Status" and "Epic Status" columns next to each other and compare them

If the Epic Status of an Epic is set to Done, it won't be visible on the Epic Panel or Roadmap, regardless of the Issue Status.

For those Epics which should not have a Done Epic Status, you can modify these back to open:

  1. Limit your search to those which need to be reopened
  2. Select the breadcrumbs (...) in the top-right, and select "Bulk Change X Issues"
  3. On Step 1, select the issues to edit
  4. On Step 2, select the operation "Edit Issues"
  5. On Step 3, select to edit the "Epic Status" and choose a status to change to
  6. On Step 4, confirm the change, then acknowledge it once complete

If this is the issue, I would advise either:

  • Adding Epic Status to the Epic's screen so it can be easily modified in future or...
  • Add Post Functions to each transition in your Epic's workflow to auto-modify the Epic Status depending on the transition. I like to auto-modify the Epic Status based on the workflow status' status category

Hi @Linda Song ,

StatusCategory is not the same as status, have you ever tried replacing the query conditions?

project = FTL and issueType = "Epic" and status in ("To Do", "In Progress") ORDER by rank ASC
