Showing Story cards as well as Story Swimlanes

Mark Harris February 13, 2023

My team and I are using the swimlane feature set to 'stories' to show different swimlanes for each story that has sub-tasks; very useful.  However, what is a shame, is that once the sub-tasks in the story are moved to done, then there is nothing to move on the kanban that represents the story as a whole.

Is there a way to have the story still show up on the kanban e.g. in the 'other' section as well as a swimlane?

Obviously as a work around, I could have a placeholder ticket that represents the final steps required to close out the story as a separate sub-task, but I am not a fan of likely duplicating info that is already in the story.

HI Mark - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Are you using a Team-managed Project or a Company-managed Project?

Mark Harris February 13, 2023

Hi, I am using a company managed project.

Good - you have more flexibility that way. But I should have read closer the first time. No, issues on a Kanban board can only appear in one swimlane of a board.

To be clear, I do not want an item to appear in more than one swimlane, I would like the story card visible as well as the swimlane.

All cards appear in a swimlane. If the card is on the board it is in a swimlane. If it is not on the board at all, then it is an issue of it's relationship to the board filter. Is that what the problem is?

Hmmm, I could be getting confused here.

When I have my board configured for Swimlanes based upon Story then I do not have a card for that Story, I only have a swimlane; which in turn contains cards for sub-tasks.

These subtasks can then be moved through the columns of the kanban, great, however, I can no longer do this for the story. e.g. move a Story card to a QA column when all subtasks are complete and we need to verify against the stories AC as the story is now represented by the swimlane, not a card.

What I was wondering is whether it was possible to have the swimlane AND the card for the story.

E.g. this is what I would like:

Can you share the details of what the swimlanes look like in the Board settings?

Mark Harris February 15, 2023

Sure, in 'Board Settings -> Swimlanes' there is just one dropdown 'Base Swimlanes on': which is set to 'Stories'.

I would change it to base it on JQL. Then populate that and see if it gets you want your need.

Mark Harris February 16, 2023

I did think about JQL, but I didn't know what query I would use.  For each swimlane I could have a query that refers to a specific story, but then I would I have to keep updating the queries each sprint.

Do you really need a different swimline by story? How many stories would you be showing on the board at one time?
