Shouldn't my total time spent on epic include the subtasks of it's child issue

My epic total time spent field shows 4 weeks, which is the log that is logged in the child issue of the epic. But the Child issue also has other subtasks linked to is. So ; 1-> 0 -> -1 link levels. (AP-1665 is the epic of AP-1989)

The subtasks has total 10 weeks of log. So shouldn't my time spent on epic shows 14 weeks instead it shows 4 week?

Thanks.

Hi @İclal Aslan 👋🏻,

I have reviewed and analyzed the situation you shared. Unfortunately, Jira’s native Time Spent field does not include worklogs from subtasks in the total. For this reason, the total time at the Epic level reflects only the worklogs added to the first-level issues under the Epic, and does not automatically roll up from deeper levels (subtasks).

However, we don’t want this to be a limitation for you. If you are open to using third-party solutions, we would like to recommend WorklogPro - Timesheet for Jira, a powerful and user-friendly app that provides exactly the features you are looking for.

🌱 WorklogPro - Timesheet for Jira, offers three custom fields that can help in this case:

  • Total Time Spent(WP)
  • Total Original Estimate(WP)
  • Total Remaining Estimate(WP)

🌱 With these custom fields, you can easily see rolled-up worklog totals across hierarchical levels — meaning you can track time from epic → issue → subtask all together.

For example, as shown in the screenshot below, you can generate reports for any date range, view total logged time under the Total column in your timesheet, and also access overall logged time historically using the Total Time Spent custom field.

🌱 Alternatively, you may simply add this custom field to the Issue View to easily see the total time spent directly on the issue screen.

Hi @İclal Aslan,

As mentioned already, this is a known issue/limitation of Jira Cloud tracked in JRACLOUD-70150.

If you are open to using an app from Atlassian Marketplace, you can obtain the total time spent in epics by summing the Time Spent values of their child items (stories and subtasks) using the Pivot Table & Pivot Chart gadget offered by our Great Gadgets app.

Jira_time_spent_by_epic_with_subtasks.jpg

To achieve this, the gadget should be configured like this:

image.png

The gadget must be configured with a JQL that returns the stories under the epics (sub-tasks not needed), like this one, in which DEMO-1, DEMO-2... are the epics to track:

parent IN (DEMO-1, DEMO-2, DEMO-3, DEMO-4, DEMO-5)

In addition, the stories under the epics must have the "Include subtasks" option checked:

Hope this helps.

Hi @İclal Aslan

If you are fine to explore a mktplace add-on for this requirement, I can suggest our app

Issue Hierarchy

The app allows you to view your Epic hierarchy in a tree view. You can view %complete progress at each parent level. It roll ups the time tracking fields, story points or custom numeric fields at each parent level. The app can be added to a dashboard as well.

Hi @İclal Aslan

Sum of Time Spent should retain all child items if beneath an EPic if the Epic is linked to the story via the parent field.

To me it seems that the relation between the Epic (AP-1665) and Issue (AP-1989) is not via the parent field.

Hi,

It is via parent-child link type. Ap-1665 is the parent of AP-1989.

HI @İclal Aslan

According to this article, there should be a roll up

https://community.atlassian.com/forums/Jira-articles/Understanding-quot-Time-Spent-quot-vs-quot-%CE%A3-Time-Spent-quot-in/ba-p/3033062

But on testing this, time logged on sub-task is not taken into account to the Epic.

This is an issue, you can also follow this via https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-70150

Hi,

Thank you. It is sad that this is a problem since 2018 :D

Hi @İclal Aslan

I think the Sum of Time Spent is summing only the direct child from the work item, not all the descendent.

Hi, I saw this but i think because the sub tasks of a story is included in the story it also should include in the epic.
