Setting up swimlanes on free JIRA software

I would like to set up swimlanes to categorize work on my kanban board for a sprint. I am unable to find the swimlanes option that other tutorials reference- am I missing a particular setting? Can I set up swimlanes with a free jira software account? 

When i try to configure board to add swimlanes, I do not see an option to do so. I've tried this on other projects with multiple tasks on boards, but was not able to do so either.

Welcome to the community 🙂

The project you are referring to, is a team-managed project and the you can organise the swimlanes with only available options on the board itself. The tutorials you have seen is from company-managed project

Go to Board section in you project and you will see the "group by" option to organise the issues in swimlanes
