A Scrum Master reached out to me today looking for a solution to an issue they just ran into. While starting a Sprint, they found that there are 2 stories already in the "done" status prior to the Sprint starting and asked me why they didn't see these in the backlog view for their Scrum Board (where you build Sprints).

I let them know from what I can find done status stories do not show up in this view. I found that there isn't even a filter in this view that shows statuses, and I even created several quick filters to try and force done stories to show in this view and it's like the view just blocks done cards period.

I let them know the best solution I think of for now, at least short term is to create a filter and put it on a dashboard to show Done status stories with a future Sprint in the Sprint field, this way before they click the start Sprint button they can go to that dashboard and verify no Done status issues are accidently slotted.

My question, is there a way to show Done status stories in the Scrum Boards Backlog View?

If not, what else could be a possible solution to teammates moving stories that are in future Sprints to Done prior to the Sprint even starting?

Hi @Jason Krewson

The "start sprint" popup shows you the number of issues included in the sprint when starting it. If you compare this number to the actual number of issues in the backlog, there are issues in the sprint scope which are already done or not visible for another reason:

You can then use this comparison as an indicator to investigate further by using a filter (as you already mentioned).

Hope this helps!

No, there is no way to display it. That functionality is not available for Company Managed projects scrum board.

To help validating the issues, you may want to create additional board - Kanban board then add Swimlanes for future, open and closed print so the view in kanban board will be categories. They can just easily switch to Kanban board to view it then switch back to Scrum for sprint.

Looking into this more I did find it is not dependent on the status of the card, its dependent on the column the status is assigned to on the Scrum Board, so to test I moved Done to the To Do column and it now shows up in the Backlog View. This is not a solution of course as Done status cards being in a To Do column causes lots of other issues, but it's nice to find that the Backlog View is not controlled by a filter like I thought in the first place and later tested.

So, I guess the question is, has anyone ran into your team closing cards that were in future Sprints before the Sprint started, and if so, how did you see this before you started a Sprint? Is the Dashboard/Filter to help validate this before clicking start the solution here?
