Scrum Based Board filter not showing the Epics in the Backlog

gulab.basha December 4, 2023

Hi,

We have a Jira Scrum Board where filter is showing right Items (Bug, Epic, Story, Task) in filter view, however, when I return from filter view back to Board -> Backlog, Items are not showing.

project = BOD AND issuetype in (Bug, Epic, Story, Task) AND component = Brochure ORDER BY Rank ASC

Is there any configuration/setting I need to do to display the Items in our Board Backlog view?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Regards,

Gulab

Hello @gulab.basha

I am not fully sure to understand your problem, but if it is linked to Epics not appearing in the backlog view, it may be related to the Epic panel that is currently not activated.

You can activate it from the backlog view by clicking "Epic" and activate the Epic panel. The latter will then appear on the left side of the screen in the backlog view

Thanks to the Epic panel, you can easily see, create Epic and drag&drop tickets into them.

I hope that I've been able to help you with those explanations.

Hi @gulab.basha and welcome to the Community!

While I am not entirely sure what you mean by the filter view (the issues view?), Epics in the backlog of a scrum board are shown in the Epic panel on the left side (it may be disabled, but can be activated from the epics quick filter.

This is because Epics are there to organize your stories, tasks and bugs into the bigger deliverables they deliver to, but you are not working directly on them in a sprint. Only the task level issues enter a sprint.

Hope this clarifies!

Hi Walter,

Thank you for your prompt response with useful information. I understand your response and accept as helpful answer. What I mean is filter view as following:

Two Epics doesn't appear in actual board.

We are aware status is playing a role some how that items are not visible in Backlog. There is a bit of background to it, if you are keen to still provide the input, please read on:

* We have a Scrum process based project (BOD)

* We have a Initial Board (Landing) setup with Kanban and the boards place holder is our project BOD

* In Board Landing, we have Epics land which goes through different states and the final state is Approved

* All the Epics reached Approved state will be filtered in Board Master where all Item types and state = approved, here is where the filter view shows the right items but not in backlog

Hope this is clear, thank you in advance for your help.

@gulab.basha It may be linked to the "Epic status" field. If the latter is set to "done" your Epic will disappear from your panel. You may have modified this field manually or maybe this could be related to an automation rule?

You can maybe check if this field is marked as "done" in your search query to find out if your problem is related to this ?

What @gulab.basha was saying, used to be the way to make epics disappear from the epic panel. That has changed, however. Now, epics disappear from the panel when they are done. And, looking at your screenshot, that seems to be the case (as I see a green status there).

Hi @Gauthier Docq , @Walter Buggenhout , Yes, state field is playing the role. However, I am unable to configure the way to be show the Items in main Backlog, I definitely confirm that Epics or all other dependant items are not in Done State. If I remove State filter, Epics and all dependant items are shown in the backlog.

Can you guys the shed the light on following?

BOD project has three boards as following:

* Landing (Kanban) - Different states like To Do, In Progress, Approved (Done not used)

* Master (Scrum) - Filter is set to show the Items which are landed in Landing board and the state in Approved. In Master board, we do have standard states, To Do, In Progress, Done.

* From Master Board, we will do Program Increment and Spring planning, select the items from Master Board and further configure filters to show in Team Board (Scrum).

Does this complex flow of process work given the Items are going from Kanban mapped state to Scrum state in later stages?

Thanks in advance for your support.

Best Regards, Gulab

There is a very important piece of information missing in your description. Each board has a board filter (this determines which issues are displayed on the board) and a column mapping (this defines the columns issues in a certain status appear in).

Please check these and - if you can't figure out what is removing items from a certain board - share those details here.

Hi @Walter Buggenhout , yes, you are right, I didn't call out on the fact each board has its own criteria set. Trying to tweak the filters and they seem to show the Items correctly in filter view but after saving filter, actual board doesn't show the Items. Bit of mystery for me, I may be missing some config, hence, reached out.
