Restrict access to who can create new Fix Versions?

Diana T January 26, 2024

Hello, I am a Project Administrator and currently there are no restrictions on who can add or change fix versions, as long as they have any role assigned to them in a project. Is it possible to restrict certain roles that they can change fix versions, but just not add any new ones? Or, that certain roles do not have access to add new ones OR change them? Thank you

Hello @Diana Tkachenko

I would like to get some clarity on your question.

As @Mirek said, Project Administrators have the ability to create versions and update versions through the Releases page.

There can also be Version fields, like Fix Version/s, as part of each issue. Those fields are multi-select fields where you can select Versions that have been created in the Releases page by the Project Administrators.

Are you asking about restricting access to create, modify, and delete versions on the Releases page? Or are you asking about restricting who can update the Versions fields in issues?

Hello, yes, asking about restricting access to create, modify, and delete versions on the Releases page.

Also found out that I am both an Administrator and Project Administrator. I was told by Dev Ops that right now anyone can create, modify and delete versions which I am trying not to let happen.

Only the users assigned to the Administer Project permission in that project can create, modify, and delete Versions on the Releases page. Check the Permissions scheme for the project.

Note that adding and remove issues on a Version is a separate permission.

Are you working with Jira Cloud or Jira Server/Data Center?

If you happen to be working in Jira Cloud, and if you happen to be using a Free subscription, then all users who are granted access to a project are implicitly granted the Administer Project permission. In the Free Jira Cloud subscription it is not possible to manage permissions.

Hi @Diana Tkachenko ,

From what I know in order to manage versions you would have to be Project Administrator (just like you are). Are you sure that someone that is not a Project Administrator is able to manage it?

What distribution of Jira do you use? Cloud or On-Prem (Server/Data Center)?

Hello, thanks for your reply, found out that I am both an Administrator and Project Administrator.

Using Atlassian Jira Project Management Software
