I am currently working to clean up our Kanban board. I noticed if I don't have the "done" items added to the Kanban board filter they show up in the backlog. But I don't want them on the board or in the backlog. Any recommendations are appreciated.

I could do a release of the items, but that seems like a work-around rather than a real solution.

They're not "done" unless they're in the right hand column on the board.

You could deselect them in the board filter, but then you will have no way to get them into the done column from the board, you'll need to open each in plain Jira and transition it.

Doing a release is the correct way to clean out the "done" column.  Even if you just do it to clear the column out and there's no actual thing to release.  Just go with something obvious like "we release on Friday afternoons at 4pm to clear the week's completed work" and use a nice clear label like 2018-week-16

and if you simply want to hide them from view just have a quick filter "Hide Done"
