Project dependency after moving issues from one project to another

Deleted user March 3, 2021

Hello,

we want to split a classic software project into 2.

Therefore, we have created a new classic software project (Auth) and moved some of the issues from the old project (Ethics) to the new one.

Problems now are:

  • when creating a new sprint 1 in the new project (Auth) it creates it under the name of the previous project: Ethics sprint 28
  • when renaming it to Auth sprint 1 it also renames the previously correct Ethics sprint 28 in the other project to Auth sprint 1
  • when setting a sprint goal for Auth sprint 1 it sets the same sprint goal for the sprint in the Ethics project
  • when changing that again in the Ethics project it has an effect again back on the Auth project

Seems we have an interdependency between the 2 projects which we are not able to resolve or get rid of - even not with our internal Jira administrators.

Could you pls help here?

Thank you in advance!

Hi @[deleted] ,

is it maybe because the Auth Scrum board used for your sprint has a filter that has issues from projects Auth and Ethics ? I would first check that the Auth filter for your board is only setup for this project.

Let me know if this helps,

Hello @[deleted]

Welcome to the community.

With regard to your first bullet point, JIRA will attempt to automatically generate a sprint name based on the last sprint name shown in the board. In the new project, if it is showing a last sprint named "Ethics...", then when a new sprint is created it will default the name to "Ethics..."

With regard to your other bullet points:

A Sprint will show up in a board for either of the following reasons:

  1. The sprint was created in that board
  2. The sprint has issues assigned to it that are within the filter scope of the board.

As you said, you had one project (Project A) and you have moved some of the issue in it to a new project (Project B).

Let us say you were in the board for Project A and you had created a sprint - Project A Sprint 1.

Let us say that sprint - Project A Sprint 1 - had Project A issues A-1, A-2, and A-3 in it.

Let us say that you moved Issue A-3 to Project B, but left it assigned to Project A Sprint 1.

Project A Sprint 1 will show up in both projects' boards. It will show up in Project A's board because it meets both of the conditions specified above. It will show up in Project B's board because it meets condition #2.

It is still just one sprint showing up in both boards. If you change the name or goal of that sprint in either board, that change will show in both boards.
