We used to use Jira like 2 years ago. Now we are trying to get it back - I have set up recent version, reneved Jira Core license but when I try to restore my old backup (dated 2016) it says my license requires renewal. But whatever I try to do to use new license, it always says that it is expired. Is Jira Core insufficient here?
For a record - I was fooled by "Jira" in each license. Jira Core and Jira Software are two DIFFERENT things. I had wrong license. I ordered Jira Software license now, have my Core order refunded and all is now flying.

quick update, I installed old 7.3 of Jira and was able to restore my backup. But I'd now need to upgrade to 7.12 so again - will it all work and if not, why?

No, not really. Here is exactly what I am facing:
- I have backup made with 7.3
- I had license on that 7.3 - license is now expired
- when I install recent 7.12 and try to restore my backup it complains about invalid license. I purchased Jira Core license, but no matter what I do it is not accepted and I stuck at backup restoration
- I installed 7.3 again and I am able to restore my backup on that version using my Jira Core license
- But I want to upgrade to 7.12 and I got no clue how to do that in current situation.

I got a feeling that my culprit is Jira Core license. I perhaps need Jira Software? But from other hand why it works on 7.3 then?

in your 7.3 Jira, can you please check if you had the license for Jira Core or Jira Software, just to be sure.
And when you renewed your license, you should have recieved a new license key.
When you add that key in your 7.3 installation, does Jira accept that key and do you have a valid license with active maintenace then?
