I have X Jira Story issue displayed on my screen (example: Story 2 displayed)

  • Story 1 needs to be completed before Story 2
  • Story 3 needs to be completed after Story  2

For linking issues in Jira Story 2:

  • is Story 1 linked as the pre-requisite?
  • is Story 3 linked as the post-requisite?

There is a difference of opinion as how these linking terms should be used

Hello @John Spencer

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Are "pre-requisite" and "post-requisite" the terms you see when you are viewing the Issue Links while viewing an issue? The text that displays in that view represents the Outward and Inward Descriptions for the type of Link used between the issues.

In my experience it is advisable to make that display text clearly define the relationship.

If Story 1 needs to be completed before Story 2, and I am viewing Story 1, then in Story 1 in the Issue Links section I would want to see text like

"is pre-requisite for"

and then Story 2 in the list.

Since I'm viewing Story 1, I would read that as

Story 1 "is pre-requisite for" Story 2

If I was viewing Story 2, then in the Issue Links section I would want to see text like.

"is post-requisite for"

Since I'm viewing Story 2, I would read that as

Story 2 "is post-requisite for" Story 1
