you can remove any external app you want to. Of course, you will lose functionality, maybe something is going wrong (e.g. if you are using workflow functions which are not there anymore).
A simple "replace" A with B is not possible. You have to install the new app and replace the functionality of the old app with the functionality of the new one. Depending on the app and your usage of it, this might be a difficult task.
Try replacing it first in a testing environment. So you can get a feeling of the effort.
