PSQLException: ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0x00 while migrating jira project data to cloud jira, what is the cause and how to resolve this issue. 500+ projects are migrated except 1 project is incomplete at 99%, around 1k issues are not migrated to cloud.

In the post migration logs, we have got this issue called "PSQLException: ERROR: invalid byte sequence for encoding "UTF8": 0x00"

Atlassian also doesn't have solution for this and they have open Bug for this issue [MIG-2430] Project import incomplete due to invalid byte sequence in description and comments. - Create and track feature requests for Atlassian products.

If anyone know how to resolve this issue, please let us know.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi @Halamma T B

In this cases it's best to contact Atlassian Support.

They can help in these kind of problems on migration.

Hi Marc,

We have already raised the ticket with Atlassian, but they clearly said that there is no formal workaround for this issue right now. they have open Bug for this issue [MIG-2430]

Hi @Halamma T B

Not for us as users.

But Atlassian can see the DB behind your instance and the logging.

They might be able to fix this from their end.

Otherwise, you can export the issues from the Sever/DC and import them manually via CSV.

Is there specific information in the missing issues, like fields based on apps, that are not in Cloud or base on an app not available in Cloud

Hi @Halamma T B ,

If you get exact issues that are causing the problem in the migration logs, can you try updating them via DB directly (descriptions or comments) to see if that will help? 👀

I've never experienced this, but we usually do direct DB updates in cases where some specific, small-pool entities show up as blockers for migrations.

Btw, I'm assuming we're here talking about DC > Cloud migration and using JCMA to do so?

Cheers,
Tobi

Hi Tomislav,

Yes, we are doing DC to Cloud migration using JCMA.

In the post migration logs, it's not showing in which issues there is invalid byte sequence error. we have to run some queries to identify where exactly the issue is, but we don't have mysql query to fetch these details, we have asked the Atlassian support team provide us the DB query to fetch the details and fix the issue, but till now we haven't got the response. If you know any such details, please advise.

Ahh, shame these problematic issues aren't listed there.

I would really like to help out here, but I haven't stumbled upon that issue, and I've checked with my colleagues who did the Confluence migration in the past couple of months, but yeah, no help there either. 🫤

Yeah, best bet would be to wait for Atlassian Support, although they are usually relatively responsive when it comes to migrations.
Any chance you got a migration manager from Atlassian (it's for larger instances only, though)? They can definitelly escalate that. 👀
