We have a backlog board created on a nextgen board accessing this board system becomes unresponsive for a long period of time >20sec and error messages of unresponsiveness. Development board with >3k logged. Any ideas of what can be done or checked to resolve this? Since this is a NextGen board I am not finding filters to add or if that would help.

Unfortunately, I'm afraid you are a bit stuck at the moment. Boards only handle fast with fewer than 500ish active issues on them. I don't know of any way to improve that.
