New UI - boards not working especially across Projects

First of all, there is no way to display the Boards option in the Sidebar in the new UI to the Create Boards page that lets you create boards across projects yoururl.atlassian.com/jira/boards. There is no option for Boards.  Ok, so I navigated there but why is it gone?

Then, when I did create a Board in my project, using a filter that includes multiple projects and excludes "done" statuses, when I click on Timeline or List, it's not using the filter on those views, it's only showing me tickets in the project.

I created the board for a reason and it includes tickets across projects. But there is no way for me to have a board that does that??  This is unworkable.

Hi @Katrina Meyers,

I totally understand what you're saying. Just trying to help out and clarify a couple of things ...

The old navigation did not have a separate listing for boards either in cloud. But it has become (even) more difficult to find them in the new navigation. Several people have mentioned that already in Community here over the last couple of weeks, so maybe that may be an incentive to look at improvements there.

Atlassian has introduced a location for boards in Jira cloud several years ago. This location may be a project or a user profile. A board will always be visible from that source location - if it is a project, your board will appear under the project you defined as its location.

For multi-project boards, this may indeed be challenging at first. And I'm with you that having a boards menu option would definitely help. As it is not there (currently), you can also access all boards by clicking in the search bar at the top of the screen (the big one) and click Boards at the bottom of the dialog that pops up to find them all. You can star them there for easier access.

A final note on timeline and list views: indeed, these views only show the issues of the project they are in. Unlike the board view, they are not based on a filter - they are tied to a single project. This was already like this before the navigation was changed.

Alternatives for this are Plans - as you indicate being on a premium plan, you should have access to those. They let you build timelines across multiple projects. There is no real 1-1 alternative for the list view across multiple projects, but Atlassian seems to bringing the all work view (best accessed via Filters > Search work items) very much in line with the list view.

Hope this helps!

But even the board that I created with a filter that includes multiple projects, the ONLY options across the top respecting the filter is the Kanban one. Every other option is showing me everything in the Product Management Project which is useless. I need to see subsets of work which is why I create Boards in the first place.

Our development boards include tickets across a bunch of professional services projects and have since the feature was added. When I open one of these boards in the new UI, it is still including tickets across multiple projects in the Backlog and Active Sprints. So why can't I make a NEW one that does the same thing? This looks to me like when everyone gets the new UI there will now be tabs across the top that aren't just for that board but in reality a totally different data set. This will only cause confusion, why would the new UI make this be the case?

Plans have been the bane of my existence - I tried Advanced Roadmaps which got changed twice and then semi deprecated, and now it's morphed into Plans? what makes me think that if I invest in building a Plan that it will actually work?  This functionality is so frustrating and as Director of Product Management , I'm wasting a bunch of time and still not getting the visibility that I need.

Hi @Katrina Meyers

Some things have changed with the new UI. But you can still see and edit the boards on the left.

when I click on Timeline or List, it's not using the filter on those views, it's only showing me tickets in the project.

Those are completely different things from a SCRUM or KANBAN board.

I created the board for a reason and it includes tickets across projects. But there is no way for me to have a board that does that??

You can edit the board like always and add the projects using a JQL query.

What exactly can't you find or doesn't work for you?

Regards - Aaron

Yes, if the board already exists, you can see it there. I'm talking about adding NEW boards that aren't just for the one project, which is what the Create Board plus sign does.
