Been using Jira from many years now.. started a new project and sprint. Created an issue which in the detail reflects the assigned project and sprint. Yet, the issue is not visible in the sprint nor backlog. It is only visible when selecting to view Issues. My suspicion is that it is somehow related to Jira\ system config for the project.. but don't know.
What type of project are you working with - Team Managed or Company Managed? This will be shown at the bottom of the navigation pane on the left.
At at the top of the navigation pane below the project name does it say Software, Business, or Service Management?
If you are using a Company Managed project, can you show us the Board Filter?
Can you show us an image of the Backlog screen for your board, showing the Sprint to which you believe you have added the issue?
Can you confirm that you don't have multiple sprints in your instance that have been given the same name (the name of the targeted Sprint)? To do so, go to the Advanced Search screen and search for
"sprint = <type in name of your sprint>"
...and tell us if there is more than one match listed for the Sprint name.
Thanks for the response.
After looking at the "Board Settings", I can see that "Some issues in the Saved Filter will not be shown on the board".
It looks like the issue is the Board\ workflow which I associated with an existing one. But it doesn't seem to be "taking". Still shows a default workflow.
Perhaps it is me, but the project config feels very confusing-- at least on a free account.

Based on your response I am leaping to the conclusion that you are working with a Company Managed project.
The workflow is actually associated with the Project, not specifically with the Board. The Board is just a way to visualize and manipulate the issues in projects, and will pull in the issues that match the board's filter.
The next thing to look at is the Columns settings for the board. Are there any statuses showing up in the Unmapped Statuses area?
This section will show you all the possible statuses of issues that are within the scope of the board's filter. If you have any statuses in the Unmapped area, then issues that currently are in those statuses will not show up in your Backlog or on your Board. You need to have each status mapped to a column. Drag the unmapped Statuses to the appropriate column and drop them there.
If the issue is not unmapped statuses, I ask again if you can please share with us the filter that is used by your board and then the details of the values set for each of the filter criteria for the missing issues.

The issue is resolved-- as there were unmapped statuses. What was\is not clear to me-- is that I associated an existing workflow scheme which should have mapped the statuses appropriately.

The association of the workflow is to the project. The configuration for a board is entirely separate. Statuses do not necessarily automatically get mapped to columns in a board.
If you change the workflow that is associated to the project and add Statuses to it, or associate an entirely different workflow scheme to the project, the board will pick up the new statuses (if the board filter does not exclude them in some way) but it will not automatically assign those new statuses to columns. It would have no way to determine to which column those new statuses should be mapped.
