Need clear directions to create an Agile Board that covers a number of projects

Gabriella Turek September 27, 2021

Hello, I have been battling with this issue for a while now. Documentation is scattered and often old. What I want to do is simply create an Agile board that will include issues for a number of projects.

I have not been able to do this at all, it is very frustrating. It seems to be dependent on the type of project (classic vs. new-gen) and team-managed vs. company

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

Hi @Gabriella Turek

First of all - 'classic' projects are now re-branded as 'company-managed' projects, and 'next-gen' are rebranded as 'team-managed' projects. You will only be able to create a board with issues from multiple projects if your board is hosted in a company-managed Software project.

If you go to the project where you would like to host your board, there should be a dropdown arrow next to the board name - click on this, and then on Create Board

create board.png

You should then select Scrum or Kanban - Kanban is a to-do style board, Scrum is used for Sprints (I assume this is what you mean by 'Agile' board?). You will then select if you want to create the board using an existing project or a new one - based on what you have said, I would select the Board from an existing project option.

Enter a name for your board, select the projects which you would like to include on the board and select the location of the board.

This should then create the board with your desired requirements. If you go to board settings > Edit filter query, this is where you would edit the the filter pulling in issues from the multiple projects to your board, if you wanted to add / remove projects from your board at a later date.

Hope this helps!

The easiest way is:

  1. Search for the issues you are interested in, generating a filter such as "project in (ABC, DEF, GHI)"
  2. Save this filter with a sensible name
  3. Go to any company managed project (ideally one that is to be included by the board)
  4. From the options on the left, select board -> create new board
  5. Select scrum or kanban,
  6. "create from saved filter"
  7. choose your saved filter

Thank you.... As usual in Jira, there's more than one way to skin a cat ;-)
