We want to make sure information will not disappear from cloud storage without a heads-up for us to backup.
Also, is there a limit for info storage on a free plan?

Welcome to the Atlassian community.
There is not a limit on the number of items, spaces, configurations that you can have in your Free Jira Cloud instance.
There is a limit on storage of 2 GB. Atlassian will not delete the data if you reach that limit. You will be notified that you will not be able to add more to storage if you hit that limit.
The other thing you need to be aware of is that if the site is left inactive for an extended period of time then Atlassian will warn you that it will be deactivated if activity doesn't commence. In that scenario, if they do deactivate your subscription they will tell you when they do that. After deactivation the data will be held for a limited period of time and then will be permanently deleted.
