My backlog has a "backlog" sub list but not a "board" sub list

Austin Mierow November 22, 2023

I am a Product Manager that's New to Jira: when I go to to Projects (select project) and then Backlog View - my list seems to be missing a section for "board" - all issues just go into the backlog.

My understanding of what should be happening: I should be ordering issues in the backlog and then be able to drag them to the "board" section when my engineers are ready to take them on. From there they get tracked on the Kanban Board

Thanks All: I finally found my answer: which is that for a status to show on the backlog it has to be present on the Kanban Board. We use multiple statuses that my lead engineer doesn't really care about and so they weren't adding them to the Kanban board. Once the status was added to the Kanban board it was visible on the backlog.

Hello @Austin Mierow

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

When you go to the Project menu and select View all projects, and then find your project in the list, what does it say for that project in the Type column?

Whether or not a Board is created initially (during the creation of the project) depends on the project template that is selected.

Service Management projects do not get a board created automatically, so the Board option will not initially appear for them. A new feature has recently been added to that you can enable a kanban board for a Service Management project through Project Settings > Features.

When a Software project is created, the administrator can choose from three templates; Bug, Kanban, and Scrum. If Kanban or Scrum is chosen then a board is created and the Board option is available. If the Bug template is chosen then a board is not created. A board can be added though.

Can you provide a screen image of what you are seeing where you see "Backlog view"?

Hi @Austin Mierow

Do you mean you can't locate the Board? It should be the option directly below Backlog on the left-hand menu - Kanban Board

Or, do you mean you can't drag items onto the Board from the Backlog?

If yes, there should be a section at the top of your Backlog which is sectioned off from the wider list - this is the section you need to drag issues into to make them appear on the Board itself.

You can also right-click an issue and select...

  • Team-managed Board: Move to > Board
  • Company-managed Board: Move to > Next Status (it's the top option)
