Moving license from one server install to another

As a dev-op I was tasked to migrate our running JIRA install to a new host. Now I'm wondering, when I use the XML dataimport feature, I read that it imports the license as well. What does that mean for our running production install? Will I run into issues? Will I lose the license on one of the installs?

I just wanted to test the import to see if all is well and then switch after a certain testperiod. What's the best approach for this? Thanks!

Your production installation will be absolutely fine.

Your best option on the test instance is to use the development licence on it instead (you can get this from the licence page on your my.atlassian account).  It's intended for dev/test and failover systems.
