Moving issues from Backlog automatically when status changes

Nancy Magalhaes September 10, 2020

Hello. I am very new to Jira. In Backlog I created 2 new columns labeled On Hold and Not Considered. If I change the status of an issue to one of these two I can still see it in Backlog. Is there a way to automatically remove it from view in Backlog?

I hope this makes sense.

Thank you.

Nancy

Hi Nancy, welcome to the Community.

You mention creating columns in Backlog but this is not possible (unless something radical has changed :-)). You create columns in your board (Kanban or Scrum). That asside, do you know if you are using a Classic or Next-gen project? NG will display prominently in the lower left corner.

The way the backlog works relative to when an issue disappears from the backlog depends on project type and board type. Generally you have items in To Do status defining your backlog. Then you create a sprint (scrum) or you move an issue to say In Progress (Kanban) where it sort of does a 'sprint-y' thing and places the issue at the top of the backlog screen under an In Progress heading. Now in both cases the issue will stay on the Backlog screen in the aforementioned areas until you move the issue to Done in the active board area.

Please let me know if this was not helpful.

Hello.

Looks like it is Classic. I do not see NG on lower left corner. Apologies I think I did not describe my question correctly. I added a new status to the Backlog. One labeled On Hold and the other Not Considered. If there is an issue in Backlog and I change it to one of the mentioned statuses can I have the issue automatically move (disappear) from Backlog?

Or

In order for me to do what I am explaining will I have to create a new board?

I included a screen shot. The two red circles is where Not Considered and on Hold are located.

so by mapping statuses into the Backlog that means that any issue in that status will appear in the backlog screen. If you don't want them to appear on either the backlog or active board simply drag the status to the far right to the Unmapped status column. The other option you have is to exclude those statuses within the filter that defines the board. Again, this is if you never want to see them in either your backlog or your board.

Now if you want them to show for some folks/scenarios but not others then maybe two separate boards would meet your needs? So lets say you don't want the team to be distracted by issues in these two statuses but maybe you as the PM need to keep an eye on these. Then you could create your own board that has these issues allowing you to change the status from On hold to To Do for instance.

Does this make sense?

Yes. This is helpful.

Thank you!
