Moving an Item out of 'To Do' marks it as resolved

Rowan.Fox

On a new Jira board created for my team whenever an item's status is changed from To Do to any other, such as In Progress, the issue appears to be considered resolved, as the 'Done' resolution field appears next to the status. The issue is also marked with strikethrough formatting on the board, which is visually confusing.Jira 1.jpgJira 2.jpg

Hi @Rowan.Fox

As mentioned by @Staffan Redelius , this must be a workflow post function, does this only occur on work items of a specific type?

Check the workflow scheme and the workflow related to this work type.

Hi @Rowan.Fox

Can you share a screenshot of the workflow?

Hi @Rowan.Fox and welcome to the community!

This occurs when the resolution is set for the work item. If you are working in a Company managed project this is most possible set in the workflow transition as a post action.

If you are using a Team managed project it is most possible done via an automation.

So depending on the type of project/space you are using check either the workflow or the automations.

Hi, thank you for the quick response.

The board is under a wider company space, but this behaviour only appears to be under that particular board. I don't believe any automation was specifically set up for this board.

Double checking both the automations for the wider space and the workflow transitions, I can't see anything that would make this be a post action.

Hi,

The workflow is connected to the space and work-item type so the behaviour should be the same for all work items of the same type in the space.

To find the workflow in question go to space settings (three dots to the right of the space name) -> Workflow

  1. Identify the workflow connected to the Work item Type and click on "Edit workflow".
  2. Click on any transition from ToDo and verify that there isn't a "Set resolution" under "Perform action"
  3. Repeat for all possible transition from ToDo

To verify that there is no Automation involved

  1. Go to the work item in question and look for Automation in the right panel.
  2. Click refresh to se recent rule runs

Let me know if this helps

Hi

Thank you, I have limited permissions to check the workflow, but I'm getting in touch with the space owner to check the above.

As far as automation goes, the only automation is 'When an issue is transitioned to In progress → set Start Date field to current date', which appears to only be doing what it says on the tin and altering the start date, unless that somehow also affects the resolution field.

To note as well, with my limited access to Workflows, I can still see 'There are no transitions out of this status' listed under every available status. Would that indicate that there are no actions being performed for transition from To Do?

Hi @Rowan.Fox

Your comment "There are no transitions out of this status" indicates that you have a flat structure in your workflow allowing moving from any status to any status.

In that case check the incoming transition (from Any-> In progress) to see if that has a post action setting the resolution.

Could you also check the history of the issue. It might be that it has been moved to a status that sets the resolution i.e. 'Done' and then been moved back to in progress. This is actually more likely the problem.

If that is the case ask your admin to set a Post action removing the resolution when transition to 'In progress'

The automation setting the start date will not affect the resolution

Best regards,
/Staffan
