Missing work items on board

Mark Leusink November 12, 2025

I have a team-managed software space. One of the statuses in our workflow is 'Next release'. We move items from the Backlog to this status.

In the List view I currently have 8 items with that status, but if I look at the Board, it only shows 4.

  • the item category for Next version is 'To do'
  • in the Board configuration it shows that there are 8 work items in the "Next release" category
  • no filters have been applied to the board

The same problem exists for the "In progress" column on my board: the list shows more items than the board.

Any thoughts?

I'm currently having the same issue. I have a lot of tasks created in a Sprint but all of the dont show in Backlog view. But In view "List" they are showed. I tried cleaning all filters but nothing happens.

Hi @Mark Leusink

Welcome to Atlassian Community!

Could you please check if your board is grouped?

If it is, try changing the grouping and verify whether all work items become visible.

Regards,
Ashish

Hi,

Thanks for responding! But no: no grouping is enabled (I explicitly clicked 'Group' > 'None' to confirm)

Please check if missing items are in Backlog, if it is then move them from Backlog to Board and then check the Board:

In above screenshot, Backlog has 3 work items and Board has only1. Below is the screenshot from Board that showing only 1 Item.

After I moved all the items from Backlog to Board, Board is now showing all the items (Story, Task, Bug) as expected, when my board grouping is set to None.

Note: If you have an Epic with the status “Next release”, group your board by Epic to ensure the Epic is visible.

They were in the Backlog. I moved them to the Board category and now they shown on the Board as well. Thanks!

Unfortunately that solves only part of the issue:

  • The Backlog category on the Backlog page (from the screenshot above) shows only 12 items, but I have (way) more in the List view with that status.
  • The In progress column on the Board shows only 4 items. In the List view (and in the Board configuration) I see that I have 19 items with that status).

Check the Work Item Types in List view, whether they are Epics or Sub-Tasks and accordingly try to do Grouping on Board. The screenshot you shared is showing that the workflow that has status "New release" is shared between Epic, Task, Sub-Task, and Bug.

In the List view, filtered by status In progress, I see that I have:
  • 7 Tasks
  • 4 Bugs
  • 1 Epic
  • 7 subtasks

(totalling to 19 work items)

The In progress column on the Board only shows 4 (3 Tasks and 1 Bug). Grouping on the Board doesn't seem to change the items that are shown, it only groups them.

Note that this project has been around for a while: it
has work items that go as far back as 2017.
