Hello,
I'm evaluating Jira Cloud and noticed something unusual when creating global custom fields.
When I go to:
Jira Settings → Issues → Fields → Create custom field
I can only choose these field types:
- URL field
- Checkboxes
- User Picker (single user)
- Radio Buttons
- Labels
- Number Field
- Select List (cascading)
- Select List (single choice)
- Select List (multiple choices)
Standard field types such as:
- Text Field (single line)
- Paragraph (multi-line text)
- Date Picker
- Date Time Picker
are missing.
According to the Atlassian documentation, these field types should normally be available.
Could you please confirm whether this is:
1. Expected behavior for my Jira Cloud site,
2. A limitation of my plan,
3. A permission issue,
4. Or a problem with the new field creation UI?
I have Jira Administrator permission.
I'm using the Jira Cloud Free trial.
Is this expected behavior for the new UI, or could there be something wrong with my site?
Thank you.
Correction on my opening line, because your own evidence beats it.
I counted the picker on a current Cloud site while writing that. Thirteen types in the top group: Checkboxes, Date Picker, Date Time Picker, Labels, Number Field, Paragraph (supports rich text), Radio Buttons, the three Select Lists, Short text (plain text only), URL Field, User Picker (single user). Your original post lists nine, and the four you don't have are exactly Date Picker, Date Time Picker, Paragraph and Short text. That's too specific to be a naming mix-up or a scroll you missed.
So your read was the right one and mine wasn't. Something genuinely was off with that picker and it has since filled in, which is what a rollout landing looks like. Worth knowing the names it settled on: Short text (plain text only) and Paragraph (supports rich text) aren't new names for anything, they're what a normal site shows, and the two date types kept theirs.
The rest holds. No All toggle to hunt for, that one really is Data Center, and apps are still the only lever I can find that changes what's on offer.
Thank you for checking it again and for the correction.
I really appreciate you taking the time to verify it on a current Cloud site.
It makes much more sense now. Since my original screenshot only showed nine field types, it seems that something really was different at that time.
I'm also glad to have confirmation that there is no "All" toggle in Jira Cloud and that apps are the only supported way to add additional field types.
Thanks again for your detailed explanations and for following up with the correction.

Nothing is rolling out and it isn't the trial. What you're looking at is already the full list.
The curated-shortlist-with-an-All-toggle behaviour is real. It's a Data Center thing. Server's dialog opens on a standard set and makes you pick All to see the rest. Cloud's doesn't work that way. The whole set renders in one scrollable list, so there's no toggle waiting to be found. That's why you couldn't find it.
On customising what's offered, I can't find any setting for it. The field admin docs cover contexts, configurations, schemes and screens, and none of them touch the type picker itself, so I don't think you can reorder or hide a type. Happy to be proven wrong there. The one lever that genuinely changes that list is apps. A Forge app can register its own field type and admins can then create fields from it, which is why two sites can show different pickers. That's additive though. I've not come across anything that takes a type away.

Thank you for the detailed explanation.
That clears up my confusion.
I now understand that the "All" option exists in Data Center, but not in Jira Cloud, where the full list is shown from the beginning.
I also appreciate you checking whether the available field types can be customized. It is good to know that there doesn't appear to be an official way to change the field type picker, except for adding new field types through apps.
Thanks again for taking the time to explain this.

Hey @Komatsubara ,
This is expected. the create field dialog defaults to a curated shortlist of the most commonly used types, not the full set. Look for an "All" filter/toggle at the top of the field type picker (it's easy to miss since it doesn't look like a filter at first glance). Selecting that will show you the complete list, including the less common types.
One thing worth checking on your end: Atlassian is progressively rolling out a new unified "field schemes" experience in Cloud that's replacing the old field configurations/field configuration schemes setup. If your site has already moved to it, the create-field flow may look slightly different from older screenshots/docs you find, worth confirming which experience you're on if the "All" option isn't where you expect it.

Thanks for the suggestion.
As shown in the screenshot attached to my original post, I don't see an "All" filter or toggle in the Create Field dialog.
If the displayed field types are a curated list of commonly used types, is there any way to customize that list? I'd like to change the default field types shown to users, if possible.

Those types were renamed, so it's probably less broken than it looks. In the current create-field screen, Text field (single line) shows as "Short text", the multi-line one as "Paragraph", and Date Picker as "Date". That's straight from Atlassian's own field-types list. None of them are plan-gated either, so a Free trial with admin rights isn't the blocker. Your options 2 and 3 are out.
So before calling it a UI bug, look at the names. Do you see "Short text", "Paragraph" or "Date" in your list at all, or none of the three? If none of them appear under any name, that usually means the newer field-create experience is still landing on your site. It rolls out unevenly, and a trial can sit mid-transition for a while. Nothing you set wrong.

Thanks for the insight.
I can confirm that I do see the renamed field types such as "Short text", "Paragraph", and "Date", so this does not seem to be a case where the field types are missing.
It's possible that what I'm seeing is related to the trial environment or an ongoing rollout of the newer field creation experience, as you mentioned.
