Missing classic/nextgen project in jira

V D May 11, 2025

I created a Jira project long back and migrated to the "latest of classic or nextgen" a while back. Now, I'm not seeing this under "Project > View all projects" link. It's not present in Archive or Deleted projects sections as well.

I saw some posts that says classic/nextgen project would have been migrated to "Company-managed" project automatically by Jira. But nowhere in Jira I could locate this project.

Any help, with detailed steps or link, to access it is highly appreciated. It has lot of Epics/Stories/Tasks that I would like to refer back.

I logged in as Admin user.

TIA

yes it's correct classic project is know as company managed and next gen as team-managed project.
You can check this using the below steps:
Click on Project -> view all project and you will the type of project there

@Dilip thanks for your response. I don't see the project under "Project > View all projects". That's the reason I can't do anything with the project, including finding it if it's classic or next gen.

Hello @V D

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

How long is "long back"? What steps were you following to "migrate to the latest of classic or nextgen"?

I've been working with Jira Cloud for over 3 years and in that time I've not encountered anything about migrating to the "latest of classic or nextgen".

Do you see any projects when accessing the site?

Is this a Jira subscription that you set up?

When was the last time you logged in to the Jira subscription, prior to logging in finding that the project is missing?

Are there any other users of the same Jira instance? Are there any other users that have administrator access to the Jira product settings?

Hi @Trudy Claspill , thanks for your response. here are my reply to your questions:

I've been using Bitbucket & Jira for more than 5 years. Last time I accessed Jira was in 7/2022. I don't exactly remember what I did during the introduction of classic/nextgen, so many changes happening in Jira frequently and that's one reason I paused using Jira since 7/2022.

I'm logging in with an account that has admin access.

1. When I login to admin.atlassian.com YESTERDAY, I saw two organizations with the same name. But, I created only one org and have been using only that. Not sure why there were two.

But, TODAY, I logged out, cleared cache and logged in again in Chrome. Now, I see two different orgs. One with the same name as yesterday. Name of the 2nd one is changed and based on login id with a number suffix. Not sure why/how it got changed today.

2. When I go inside the first org, it shows: "Quick actions" with "Invite users", "Add product", "Verify domain". Under "Monitor", it has "Monthly active users", "Requests for product areas", "User with access to your products". None of those sections have any data.

3. When I go inside the second org, it shows: "Showing 0 results out of 0 apps". And, no data.

4. When I go to Jira website of the first org, https://<org>.atlassian.net/jira/your-work and click "Projects > View all projects", it does not show my old project.

5. There are two users and one has admin access and the other I'm not sure. But when I visit admin.atlassian.com with the second login, it shows two orgs with the same name. Even after logging out, clearing cache, logging in again, in Chrome Incognito mode, I see the same two orgs.

6. Logging in with the second user into Jira, I don't see the old project. Same as #4 above.

7. Also, yesterday, when I logged in to bitbucket, it had links to Jira issues (for example "ABC-123"). When I clicked them, it goes to Jira but displayed error (something like you don't have access or ...). But, I logged in with user that has admin access. So, most likely it's not related to access issue but most likely the project itself is not present.

8. Strangely today, bitbucket just shows Jira issue number "ABC-123" without any link.

9. Whole Jira and Bitbucket was created & configured by me with two users. And, most likely both are admin users.

Hope this gives some useful info on the issue. Please let me know if you need any more info.

The big picture is, the old Jira project is not visible.

Hello @V D

Thank you for that additional information.

When you set up your Jira subscription originally, did you elect to use the Free subscription (versus the Standard or Premium subscriptions)? Have you remained on the Free subscription?

If you used only a Free subscription, and if neither you nor the other users had accessed the Jira product in over 120 days, then the product would've been deactivated. The Organization Admins and Technical and Billing Contacts for the product should've received email notifications warning of that deactivation before it happened.

After deactivation there would've been a limited time period during which the product could've been reactivated. If that was not done, then Atlassian would've permanently deleted the data. That data would no longer be recoverable.

In Bitbucket if yesterday the issue keys you saw there were links to issues but resulted in "you don't have access" messages, then the link information may have been in your browser cache. If the issue keys no longer show links that is likely due to your clearing your cache.

I suspect you may be in the situation where your original Jira subscription was inactive for 120+ days and the data has subsequently been deleted.

As only a user of my own Atlassian products I have no special access to view your accounts, subscriptions, or Organizations.

@Dilip , as an Atlassian Team Member, may have access to that type of information depending on their role at Atlassian. You may need to provide the URLs of your products in order for @Dilip to look them up.

Alternately you could try contacting the Billing/Licensing team directly through the following web page, as they would surely have the access necessary to review your account/subscription to determine if my suspicion is correct.

Thanks @Trudy Claspill for the detailed info.

I've been using the Free tier. And, since it was inactive for more than 120 days, most likely it was deleted by Atlassian team.

Click on the gear icon next to your avatar in the upper right corner.

Select Projects. That should show you another view of the list of projects. Check if the project is listed there.

If not, check on the left side for a Trash option. Click on that to see a project with the same name exists in the Trash. If it does you can restore the project.

You can also check under the Archive option. The functionality to archive a project is available only with Premium subscriptions, but if you had a trial of a Premium subscription at any point then it is possible the project got archived.
