We are merging 2 Jira instances, one is already on cloud and the other is on server.  The server instance is by Company B and uses Company B's email domain.  Company A has it's own email domain.  All users in Company B have both a Company B and a Company A email domain, but all their Jira data is linked to Company B's email domain.

Company A and Company B are merging.  Company A uses Okta and requires this for all users.

I want to make sure that we are doing the process correctly, this is the process I'm thinking makes the most sense:

  • In the migration assistant tool, migrate the users and groups first, and make sure you can log into the test cloud instance using your new credentials (you will have to create a new cloud password)
  • Migrate the projects
  • Look through the data to make sure the user mapping is correct
  • Afterwards the users can update their email address to the new email address in their own cloud account information
  • This should get picked up by Company A's AD and allow the Okta integration

I was about to post a very similar question. I see you haven't gotten any replies yet, but I wanted to see if you were able to find out if your above steps worked?

My Company A has a managed domain, but not SSO/LDAP, whereas Company B (the server we're migrating from) does use LDAP.

We are still in the process but what we are doing is updating the email addresses in the Jira database to match what their future email address will be, restarting Jira and then running the Jira Cloud Migration Assistant.  It seems to be working so far but I'm sure there's a better solution out there.

Thanks for your response. That is likely what we will have to do as well. If I happen to find another method to accomplish this, I'll be sure to post it here.
