Migrating or Cloning a project from Server/DataCenter to Cloud

Martin Grisley

Hi. We have a 3rd party consultancy who have been running a project for us on their server/data center jira instance and we would like to migrate to to our own cloud jira instance.

The workflow is quite complex as is the customisation and also volume (15000+ work items) so I am wondering if the Jira Cloud Migration assistant is the right starting place here (We only want 1 project migrated/cloned)

Hi @Martin Grisley

I am with @Walter Buggenhout on this, the migration tool is the way to go.

I would not choose to do a migration using the csv-import with that project size since there is a lot of information to migrate. Every work item probably has a lot of comments, time logs, parent/child relations, historical users and possibly also attachments and the possibilities to mess things up during the import are endless.

You can do a test migration of the project using the migration tool and it will give you some hints on what needs to be cleaned up before doing the real migration.

Be aware that Cloud works a bit different than Server/Data center, especially when it comes to how marketplace apps works. Native Jira functionality is usually pretty straight forward to migrate. Data from third party apps might be more complicated.

Best regards,

Hi @Martin Grisley,

Yes, the migration assistance would seem the most appropriate option if you ask me. It does migrate your configuration as well as the data and lets you migrate only selected project(s).

When you talk about customisation, make sure to identify what you mean by this. There's a big difference between having built a complex workflow with a lot of statuses or heavy use of marketplace apps for certain features.

As an alternative, you can also (manually) configure a project in your cloud instance and run a csv export - import to migrate just the data across.

Your best option / plan will depend on the stage of your project and whether you plan to keep working on the project or just want to consolidate the historic data to your cloud site.

Hope this helps!
