Migrate from redmine 3.1.3

Daniel Rosenkvist March 4, 2019

Hi I just wanted to ask if it is possible to migrate projects and issues from Redmine version 3.* to jira. I have read that it is possible but i have to be sure that it is possible.

Thanksful for answers

Are you using Jira Server or Jira Cloud?

The platforms are different enough in this particular area that the answer can vary depending on your product platform. So I will try to segment my answer to cover both scenarios:

If using Jira Server:

Jira Server ships with it a bundled plugin called the Jira Importers plugin.  This is a series of import tools for different platforms.  Among them is a specific template for importing from Redmine.  However, this particular module of that plugin has not really been updated in quiet some time.  You can see from our current documentation on using this over in Importing data from Redmine, that the supported Redmine versions are 1.3.0 - 2.5.2.

It might still be possible to import from your 3.1.3 version, however I don't think that this has been sufficiently tested by Atlassian to understand if this will still work smoothly in these newer versions, or perhaps you might run into unexpected changes the data structures.

Which is why I would recommend that you test out this data migration in a staging instance of Jira before you try to do this on a production level.

It might be easier / more simplistic to use the CSV importer instead, providing that redmine can export your data into a CSV format that Jira can then use.  More details about using that format in Importing data from CSV.

If using Jira Cloud:

Jira Cloud does not have this same importers plugin.  Jira Cloud documentation on Migrating from other issue trackers, instead recommends that you use the CSV importer or the JSON importer:

Redmine

We recommend exporting your Redmine data to CSV to import it to Jira.

For Jira Cloud, please see the corresponding Importing data from CSV - Jira Cloud Documentation.

I hope this helps,

Andy
