Merge two fields across projects

Malav Shah September 10, 2025

We have similar fields across projects.   I want to merge them in single field without loosing data.  How should that be done.

Hi @Malav Shah and welcome

What type of field do you want to merge? Is it plain text fields, Categories (like labels), multi choice/single choice or a numbers field? If you have multi choice fields you need to check if they are context aware (different choices for different projects).

Depending on type of field and the data you want to merge there are different options. You can either do it via bulk edit or do a update of the work items via a csv-file.

Best regards,
/Staffan

HI Staffan,

Thank you for your prompt response. The field in question is a multi-select label field, currently implemented as a custom field across multiple projects. We would like to request support in consolidating and merging these instances into a single unified custom field for consistency and ease of management.

Hi @Malav Shah

This is a user community where users (like yourself) answer questions from other fellow Atlassian users.

I will try and guide you thru the process:

  1.  Go to Filter -> Search Work items
  2. Create a search (either basic search or via JQL) to find your work items It should look something like Project = XYZ and <Your custom field> IS NOT Empty (or contains a specific value)
  3. Click on the three dots in the upper right corner and choose Bulk edit
  4. Choose the issues you want to update (start with a few to verify the process)
  5. Click "Next" in the bottom of the screen
  6. Choose "Edit issues"
  7. Update the custom field to include all of the values you want them contain
  8. Click next and Confirm

After editing all the issues you should remove the field that should not be used.

Please note:
- You need to have the Global permission to bulk edit issues
- Make sure the field is not context aware (different choices for different projects)

Let me know if this helps,

Best regards,
/Staffan

Hi Staffan,

Thanks for the prompt answer.  It is multi-select label field.   It is custom field which is added in to our multiple projects.  We need to merge them in to single custom field.
