I am pretty new to Jira, and I was wondering if I could manage a general non-direct software project. Within that project I would have sub-projects and some of those sub-projects will be software development. My target is to view the dependencies and follow-up all sub-projects. At this moment I am not sure of the outcome of this project but we are going to refine this during the project with the team. How would you suggest I could do this in Jira?

Hello,

There is no hierarchy between projects. You can not include one project into another project.

But in any case, I think what you mean you want to make a hierarchy of issues not projects. You can do it with such plugins as Structure or Big Picture.

If you do want to group projects up, there are project categories.  This does not do a lot (it has nothing to say about configuration for example), but it does enable you to see them in groups, and run searches for issues like "assignee = me and category = 'billable'"
