I'm new to JIRA and we need to migrate really old JIRA 4.0 to higher version of Windows server and SQL server. Current server is Windows server 2012 R2 and SQL Server 2008.
Current JIRA is using crowd for user access management and also LDAP.
Could someone please help with the upgrade versions path to upgrade from JIRA 4.0 -->? and further. Thank you in advance for your help with this!
Hi @KIRAN KAUR
while I absolutely agree with Sagar including the provided links it could be worth thinking about the requirement in a way where an experienced partner could help.
Atlassian partners are experienced in complex upgrade and migration scenarios. Especially as you stated you are currently on a rather old version there might be pitfalls which are not easily to be spotted by "just reading" documentation.
You can find the partner directory here:
https://partnerdirectory.atlassian.com/
In case you want to try it on your own please make sure you have a test environment available where you can test.
From my point of view, many tests will be needed until you reach the desired goal (in terms of a stable and smooth operation of the new Jira version).
You will also notice that user interface changed a lot.
There will be also many new features on the other hand. Speaking to your team and introducing what is coming up might be the most important thing to consider right now - it is indeed a huge change.
Regards,
Daniel
Hi @Daniel Ebers , thanks for sharing the additional details and I agree that even with all the details provided in URLs, it is not straight forward upgrade as each link has many other links further and so on and then some hit and trials. We will not do in-place upgrade so my new server will serve as TEST server until we get the desired results but it seems it could take additional time to troubleshoot if I did not choose correct upgrade path ex: 4.0-->4.5.x-->5.x---> so most likely we would also need to check with vendor support to confirm these details.
Also, thank you for the heads up about the changes in UI and features of the newer version. Much appreciated your help!

Hi @KIRAN KAUR Welcome to the Atlassian community.
Migrating from Jira version 4.x to latest 8.x will be a tedious task for sure, but still you can refer the below document links to get started with the upgrade planing
You can download the old Jira versions from below link :
https://www.atlassian.com/software/jira/download-archives
https://confluence.atlassian.com/jira/important-version-specific-upgrade-notes-229839720.html
I would strongly recommend to create support ticket with Atlassian to the more details about the upgrade from version 4.x
Let me know in case of any questions.

Hi @Sagar Mahajan really appreciated for this input.
I will start with the links you shared and request help from vendor as needed.
Since we are also migrating to new server, currently I'm checking for system configurations required for Win server.
Will let you know if I need further help, big thanks for your help with this!
