Link to File (in file system)

I am looking to add a link to a task's description. The following standard works well for Http hyperlinks: 

[Link description|URL] 

However, I am looking to link to files on the file system.  I have tried various variants of file:// without success. (Including: file://///)

I think I tried this many years ago, and found that it is not possible.
