Link newly created issue to new created Epic

Ilya October 3, 2024 edited

Having trouble linking an issue to a new created Epic. My logic is

1. Create new story from form.

2. If story has no parent create Epic

3. Link created Epic as parent

The linking happens but the story is not nested under the Epic in list view.

This is a team managed project.

This epic is shown as a parent (see below)

But when I manually add a parent to the issue, the issue become nested under the Epic as shown below and shows child issues and linked issues.

Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong. Maybe I don't understand the difference between linked and child issues.

Hi @Ilya -- Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Assuming the trigger issue is your Story and the rule creates the Epic, you may connect them after the Epic is created:

  • trigger: issue created
  • action: re-fetch issue (I recommend always adding this action after the issue created trigger to prevent timing / racetrack errors.)
  • condition: check the issue type
  • condition: parent does not exist
  • action: create issue, for the Epic (with no setting of links yet)
  • action: edit issue (this will act on the trigger issue)
    • set the Parent field to {{createdIssue.key}}

Kind regards,
Bill

Hi Bill,

Worked perfect. I did not know you could insert the smart key in the field. I only saw the drop down options.  Thanks for your help!

Hi @Ilya

I might suggest a different approach for this. You said a Story is created from a Form. I assume the Form is on the "Project Description" issue type?

Does the Story always get created when the Form is submitted or is it conditional?

If the Story always gets created, the Story will never have a parent already unless you set it during creation.

Therefore, why not just create the Epic when the Form is created instead of creating the Story first?

If I can better understand the use case, I can make the ideal recommendations.

Hi Josh,

Correct, the form creates a Project Description (Story)

The Project Description (Story) always get created when the form is submitted.

The form only allows me to create a story or task.  If I could create the Epic that would be ideal.
