Kanban backlog and Kanban board have same status

Is there a way to have a different status for issues in my kanban backlog than the status of the first col (TO Do) on the board? I wanted to run a filter of issues in my To Do and it is pulling in all issues in my backlog as they have the same status. It seems since they are in planning (the issues in the backlog) they should have a different status especially since they haven't flowed into the board yet. I can sort of see a similar approach that was done by hiding the issues in the Done col that are older than 14 days...I like how there is a backlog and they are isolated from the board/work flow. This is a great feature as it lets us catch any incoming work that may not be added to the workflow early and also gives us time to prioritize the work and keeps the first col in the board clear of unnecessary work. I was just wondering the thought behind keeping the status the same. I can easily work with the current design...
