I did top in the terminal and noticed CPU usage rates at about 180% for both and resulting heat so killed both PIDs.
I have tlp installed but it doesn't help.
Are there any other good ways to learn both before my first day on the job?
My interviewer wanted me to do this so I could start working right away.
I'm thinking about just watching all the videos on both.
If you're having heat issues, you need to move to a server with hardware that can cope with the processes.
A server can have heat problems for a vast variety of reasons.
I dont think anyone here can suggest what you should do with your local setup to avoid these. But i can assure you that i have running confluence AND JIRA Software on VMs for training purposes, and the VMs are really, REALLY sub-par, due to my weak laptop and i have no CPU problems even on there.

I guess I’ll try installing them on a VM to see if heat issues go away. I just really need to see an example project and the general flow of the two. If you have any suggestions besides the official documentation l, I’m all ears.

A VM on the server with the heat issues is unlikely to solve your problem.
My statement was suggesting that confluence is probably not the reason for the heat (If said server is within the minimum requirements, which i assumed).
Then again, if your confluence process is going crazy with the load, there might be some misconfiguration im not familiar with.
What specs does the server have?
