Jira recurring tasks on Timeline

Fernando_ Dili January 18, 2024

Hi,

Is there anyway to schedule an Issue/Task on Jira to be recurring? I don't mean the original issue/task being cloned (which just creates another card on the board).

I mean, being able to set up one task and this having a recurring frequency, which then shows up on the "Timeline" view. Very similar to setting up a meeting in Outlook for example. This makes seeing available time so much easier.

Right now we have to create a card for each instance. For example, our weekly recurring tasks need a Task/issue card to be created separately for each week, just so it shows up on the Timeline.

We have tried the "Recurring App". It does the same thing. It just creates another card on the board, where we have to then go in to the card and adjust the date parameters manually.

Hope this makes sense.

Thank you

Hello @Fernando_ Dili

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

Tasks will show up on the Timeline based on Start Date and Due Date. The Task can have only one value for each of these fields at a time. You could set up Automation to change the Start Date and Due Date to the next time the task needs to recur, based on the current Due date having been passed. But you cannot have one task appear multiple times simultaneously on the Timeline.

Hi Fernando - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

I am a little confused about exactly what you want. You don't want multiple cards created (even though they wouldn't be on the board at the same time) but you want it to work like Outlook meetings - which show on your calendar multiple times.

What is your actual goal you are trying to achieve?

Take a look at this article and see if it helps you any:

Hi John

Thanks for responding.

Basically want there to be one card on the "Board", but on the Timeline view it'll show up for each recurring frequency. It's just easier to absorb free time at a glance this way when future planning.

So for example, if it's a weekly task (same day, same time), it'll repeat itself on the timeline till the set end date, without having to manually adjust the time.

I think Trudy has answered whether this can be done in their response below.

Thanks again.

I would still suggest multiple cards so you can see multiple entries on the Timeline, but if you are using a Jira Software project, you could control which issues show on the board so that only one of them shows at a time.
