Jira issue creation does not update the changed 'Assignee', it allocates the 'Reporter'

I am using Jira Cloud, and have an issue where the 'Reporter' field is not updating, instead it is defaulting to the value of the 'Assignee'.

Steps to reproduce:

1.  I create a new issue in Jira

2.  I change the 'Assignee' field to the relevant person

3.  I select to 'Create' the issue

Result:  the 'Assignee' displays the 'Reporter' details and did not update to the Assignee that was selected.

This also happens when I bulk import into Jira.  It is changing the value in the 'Assignee' field to the 'Reporter' details.

Does anyone have any workaround for this.  I need to import a .csv file with 600+ tasks and I do not want to have to bulk edit the 'Reporter' field.

Sorry to have to ask, but I just want to be clear that I have understood your process correctly.  I want to repeat it back to you in my words, and hope you can tell me that I have got the right idea.

So,

  1. You click "create" and get a box asking for project, issue-type, summary, some other fields, and a reporter and an assignee
  2. You find the assignee field (which probably defaults to "automatic", but maybe not) and then search the list of users for the person you want to assign it to, click, and they are now listed as the assignee
  3. You click the "create" button at the bottom, which creates and then displays the new issue.  With the assignee set to the reporter rather than the person you selected

If I have understood this right, then I would have to say you have a script or automation that is re-writing the assignee after you click create.

I would want to

  • check the workflow for the project and issue-type, looking specifically at the post-functions on the "create issue" transition
  • Go into admin and look at all the "automation rules" to see if there may be one doing it

@Nic Brough -Adaptavist-

Yes your repeat back is exactly correct and thanks for your bullet pointed suggestions.

I will take a look at those points and see if I can see anything there.

Thanks alot
