Jira Software licensing

If a user's permission in a Jira Software project solely allows them to add, edit or delete their own comments in a story, do they require a license?

Hi Dorothy,

You might can try it first as an anonymous user. Here is some guidance.

Good morning John,

So I wanted to confirm what I took away from the document you referenced above and previous responses.

  • While JSM does not require license for our customer users, Jira Software does require license for our customers.  Therefore, they can continue to use portal to submit requests using forms but once an issue may be moved to Jira Software, they can no longer view issue from portal.
  • I can use the anonymous access as described above that will allow users to view any issue information I assign to Service Desk Customer role i.e view only and view only certain pieces of the issue and they will not be able to edit issue.
  • Question on above.  Can I set up notifications that will send email when issue is assigned or updated i.e with comments?
  • Maybe dumb question, but if they don't have to be logged into Jira how do I keep say my husband's ability to view issues in Jira.  What would be any risks?

This may be the answer for what I need.  Ultimately, we want to be transparent and allow customers the ability to respond to comments but we don't want them submitting requests through any means other than portal.

I hope these all make sense.  I appreciate any guidance!

Thank you.

Pretty much yes to everything you have above. For the notifications, they should get one anyway if a comment is added that is not "Internal" meaning only the licensed users can see it.

As far as assignments, you might could create an automation rule that sends an email to the reporter, depending on what is captured for that. If you don't make the customers actually have to be captured in the system (just as a customer and not a licensed user), then it should have the email address of the reporter.

Your husband would have to be a licensed user to view any issues other than ones he has submitted through the portal.

Hi,

I truly appreciate your help but here is what's happened so far.

  • Customer (we are talking internal customer, business said of the house) submitted ticket through portal JSM.
  • They received email notifying them that the request has been received.  They are able to view the item in portal.
  • Item gets moved to a Jira software project and issue shows them as the reporter
  • I set up automated notification to reporter when issue created since it is assigned a new issue number reflecting the new project key.
  • Reporter is not receiving notification.

What are the steps to anonymous user? Do they use a link? Are they able to update/respond to comments (I think this is set up in issue security)?

I really don't want to have to report back that the only two options to allow customers to update/respond to comments is:

1) "convert" our software projects to JSM.  This would increase license costs for developers since license cost lower for Jira Software than JSM

2) Make customers a licensed user.  Since we have approximately 25 internal customers, that's hefty cost.

Thanks again for all your help.  I try to google to find answers before coming to you.  I appreciate your responsiveness.

They won't be able to respond to JSW links because they need a license to see those. They will only get updates from comments on the JSM project.

You might could try an automation rule that copies a comment on the JSW project by the developer to the JSM project. And also have the JSW project move the issue in the original JSM project to Done with the issue is resolved.

Good morning,

If I integrate Teams with Jira, based on what I've read, Teams users will be able to update and view issues in Jira?  Do they also need a Jira license?

@Dorothy Callahan  They will need license if they want to view and edit the issue.

Mayur
