Jira Cloud Free Plan - Some but not all issues of a type showing in a board column

David Lane September 17, 2023

I have a simple Jira Project created with the default issue types (Epic, Story, Task, Bug etc.), with the same statuses for each type (Backlog, Todo, In Progress etc.) and have a board with a column for each status.

If I create an issue using the button "Create" in the header then the issue does not appear in the column. When I however create the issue using "Create issue" inline in the respective column it appears.

When I use "Configure board" and "Columns and statuses" then the correct number of issues is shown as the count beside the status. There for example I see "7 Issues" but when I go back to the board I only see 1.

What am I doing wrong?

Hello @David Lane

Welcome to the Atlassian community.

With what type of project are you working? You can find that information in the Type column on the "View all projects" page under the Projects menu.

If it is a Software project are you using a Scrum board or a Kanban board?

Can you show us a screen image of your board?

When you use the Create button in the header, are you making sure that the correct project is selected there?

Do you have any extra filters applied to the board while you are creating the issues?

Can you provide a specific example of a column where the Columns and Statuses page reports a higher number of issues than what you see on the board, and a specific example of an issue missing from that column?

The Columns and Statuses page will count all types of issues in a given status, but the board may not be configured in a way to show all types of issues. This is impacted by the type of project you are using and extra filters you may have applied to the board. Answers to the above questions will help us zero in on the answer that applies to your situation.

Thanks for the additional information @David Lane .

When using a Team Managed Software project and Kanban board with the Backlog enabled, issues will display on the board only when they have been "moved" to the board or created inline in the board.

If you look at the Backlog screen for your board you will notice two sections listing issues - one labeled Board and one labeled Backlog

For these projects/boards an issue can be in any Status and be either in the Backlog or on the Board. Only the items in the Board list shown on the Backlog Screen will be displayed in the Board screen.

When you use the Create button from the menu bar the issues will automatically be added to the Backlog list of the Backlog Screen. To have an issue in the Backlog list visible in the Board view you must drag the issue from the Backlog list to the Board list on the Backlog Screen.

When you create an issue by going to the Board Screen and clicking the +Create option at the bottom of the column, Jira understands that you want that new issue to be immediately added to the Board.

So, on the Columns and Statuses page you are seeing the counts of all issues in those Statuses, regardless of whether they are displayed in the Board Screen or the Backlog Screen.

Additionally the counts will include Subtasks and Epics, but those will not be displayed in the Board Screen by default.

Hi Trudy,

many thanks, that was exactly the issue!

Hi Trudy,

thanks for replying!

To your questions:

  • It is a "Team-managed software" Project. I think it was of type Kanban but I don't see that in the list.
  • The board itself is the one that automatically appears in the left sidebar and was not created by hand.
  • I can confirm that when I use create from header I am selecting the correct project. The tickets appear in the project when I just list the issues.
  • No filters applied to board when creating issues.
  • Here are some screenshots:
  • In the board only ND-15 is appearing

  • ND-156 is also a user story

  • Both have the status "Backlog"
  • ND-15 was created inline, ND-16 using the create button.
