Jira Cloud: Epic Link field is required; Please select and Epic.

In trying to create a new epic, I keep running into this same error. I am working from the Backlog > Epics > Create Epic section of the project, filling in the details, but keep getting the error no matter what I do.

We have several other epics which were created without issue, so I am not sure what is suddenly the problem.

Error: Epic Link field is required; Please select and Epic.

Found that I had a buried workflow validation item which requires epic links. This workflow had to be edited to remove the requirement which then allowed me to create the new epic.
